Overcoming depression [http://happiness09.orbs.com/ Happiness] - In this article, we discuss the illness of depression and what steps you can start to take to overcome depression. Firstly we would always recommend that your consult your GP if you are suffering from depression or have some of the symptoms of depression. These can include: No energy Sleeplessness Crying on most days Irritability Low confidence Low self esteem Poor concentration Panic attacks ‘mole hills becoming mountains’ [http://happiness09.webnode.com/ Happiness] - Depression is taking a massive toll on the modern world. Around 10 % of the population can expect to become clinically depressed over the coming year. There is no sign of this statistic improving and the World Health Organisation estimates that depression will impose the second-biggest health burden globally by 2020. The consequences of this are huge. This effectively means depression will be a greater burden on society than other illnesses such as heart disease, arthritis and many forms of cancer. What is striking is that depression used to be an illness that tended to strike the middle-aged however today it knows no boundaries. Today many people have their first bout of depression in their mid twenties and there are a growing number of cases of young people, in their teens being diagnosed with depression. Depression can also persist with some suffers still showing signs and symptoms of depression a year later. If left un-treated depression can last over two years (the normal definition of ‘chronic’ depression). Similarly if you don’t take preventive action, there is a 50 % likelihood that if you suffer from depression once, you are likely to have a subsequent re-occurrence. Of course depression isn’t a new illness; in the 70’smy grandfather had depression. He held a very senior role in Marconi, Chelmsford which put him under a great deal of pressure. At that time his depression wasn’t diagnosed. To cope he walked miles and miles around the local farms and fields, which gave him the space and exercise to help him overcome his illness. Infact as this went undiagnosed, it is possible that my grandfather my have not had depression. There is a very similar illness, called chronic anxiety, that is growing and increasing. More and more GP’s are also diagnosing anxiety and it seems to be out of control. The cost of anxiety and depression to individuals, organisations and society is huge. The World Health Organisation describes depression as: ‘’Depressed persons usually describe their mood as depressed, anguished, mournful, irritable or anxious. The patient explains it as a progressive loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities, like reading a newspaper, watching television, going for a walk or participating in sports. However, very often, the patients may not admit to feeling sad, as they may consider it below their dignity to experience sadness in the absence of an appropriate cause, particularly in the presence of other family members or friends. But the patient’s facial expression, voice and overall appearance may corroborate the presence of a sad mood. Frequently, there is a tendency to cry, and the patient may weep while alone or with a listener. The patient may complain of lack of energy and strength, and easily get tired of routine work like looking after personal appearance, household chores or occupational activities. A housewife may allow work to pile up, and a working person may remain absent from work. The patient starts getting feelings of personal inadequacy and has a low opinion about himself / herself: “I am good for nothing; I am a bad parent”. The patients may feel guilty or a sense of shame for no reason. He/ she may feel hopeless, that is, find no possibility of a solution even in future. Everything appears dark.’’ So that the background, which doesn’t make great reading. However research does show us that we do have the power to lift our mood and control our thoughts. As depression is effectively related to our energy levels, what if we could boost our energy in a way that triggered positive endorphins within us to stimulate us. There are a number of steps we can take to help boost ourselves, even if we are struggling with depression. Our first and most important step, is to drink, healthy clean and energised water. As we are effectively 99 % water, if we have high levels of stagnant energy (this will be common with depression) we should ensure at all times we stay hydrated. De-hydration lowers our moods and leaves us prone to illnesses, such as depression. Many adults and young teenagers simply don’t drink enough quality water, instead relying on poor quality sugary drinks /caffeine fixes and alchohol, none of which helps the mind or body, to operate in an optimum way. Our second tip is to put the right energy into the body. Eating the right natural food for your body type is essential. The energy that you put into your body directly affects your thoughts and body. If you are suffering from depression and have a very poor diet, you will only worsen your situation. It amazes us that this is not one of the first aspects that GP’s discuss with their patients, as changing to a healthy, vibrant and nutritional way of eating, can make a huge difference. Alongside this, taking the right type of exercise at regular intervals, can bring huge benefits and is a known and proven treatment for depression. The third step and also a critical step, is rest. Many of us are on the go constantly. We are bombarded by electrical signs (via various modern gadgets), work relentlessly, almost 24/7 and never allow our minds and bodies to relax. We operate at a feverish pitch. Taking time out to enjoy the moment and be with ourselves, is essential. We will write more about the importance of rest and relaxation in a future blog. [http://happiness09.wordpress.com/ Happiness] - Finally the fourth step we wish to cover in this article is that of managing our troubled minds. This is essentially part of the major problems. The human mind hasn’t changed much in the last two hundred years, yet society and our lives have become, for most of us, much more complex. Many people operate within an ‘exhausted’ or ‘tense’ state. Our emotions seem to come together and contribute to our moods, often dragging us down. Many of these emotions have their roots in our thoughts, which can drive our moods and emotions. However since the 1980’s it has become clear that our thoughts can be affected by our emotions as well. Both are energetic in their nature, so it is not inconceivable to see that they can feed of each other. However by learning how to control or manage our thoughts, minds, emotions and moods we can become better placed to interrupt any negative energy, before it grows further. We cover a host of these in our Mojo Programme at www.mojo-master.com and whether you do or don’t access this programme, we would strongly recommend you to seek access to some of the wonderful thought and mind techniques that are now available to help overcome depression, such as mindfulness and certain type of meditation. There are numerous techniques, that are well tested and proven, that can help with depression, especially the early onset of depression. As the mind and body are closely connected our whole outlook on life, as shown by research, can be shifted by tiny changes in our body. If we also change our physiology we can also change our mood and emotions. Something as simple as smiling, standing tall, laughing or pulling our shoulders back, can have a dramatic impact on our mood and the types of thoughts that come in and out of our mind. At some of our events, we show how it is impossible to think of certain negative emotions, while holding a very positive, upbeat posture. Taking these basic four steps together, can really help you overcome depression. This isn’t an illness that you need to live with and depression really can be beaten. Our final recommendations is that you build your own personalised Change Plan, which as you go through our 7 steps Change anything methodology, particularly with the help of Doctor Pal, you will strengthen your chance of achieving success and casting aside depression, whilst at the same time being on your journey to find or rediscover your Mojo With energy Mojo Master
